Thursday's Assignment

It's one thing to get a friend into your network. It's another thing to keep them.
Here are your tasks:
  1. Now that you have submitted your ESL Week contest entries, you have two days to vote by clicking on "Like"!
  2. Register for tomorrow's field trip to a career event at York University if you still have not.
  3. Role Play: Socializing with Clients
  4. Listening and Vocabulary: Maintaining Connections.
    1. Write down and practise with a partner.
    2. Record on chirbit.
  5. Check through the work for this week, and complete any bits that are missing.
Georgia: Do you know what the best part is of my new promotion? The expense account! I can’t wait to wine and dine our clients

Dan: The purpose of the expense account is to win over new clients and to keep our current clients happy. It’s not a personal slush fund, you know.

Georgia: I know. The point is to network and to build client relationships – blah-blah-blah

Dan: Schmoozing is part of our job and it’s not something to be taken lightly

Georgia: Of course not. But I’m looking forward to attending charity events to rub elbows with the business elite. Free food, free booze, and free entertainment. What more could I ask for

Dan: Talk to me in three months after you’ve had a few too many plates of rubber chicken

Wednesday's Assignment

So let's learn how to network with others!

Here are your tasks:
  1. Role Play: Important Business Contacts.
  2. Listening and Vocab: Socializing and Networking
    1. Write down and practise with a partner.
    2. Record on chirbit.

Kelly: What we need are a few people in the industry to talk up our new company.

John: I’m on top of that. I’m really well connected, as you know, and I’ve already put in a few calls to a few of the movers and shakers in our business.

Kelly: I didn’t know you had such a vast network of contacts

John: Oh, sure I do. I don’t mean to name drop, but you know Kevin Martinez at McQ Corp? I’m pretty tight with him. And Eva Arribas at Syntect? She and I go way back

Kelly: Wow, those are some heavy hitters

John: You’ve said it. And Kevin owes me one, and Eva would bend over backwards for me.

Kelly: It’s great! What did they say when you asked them to get the word out about us?

John: Um, I’m still waiting to hear back from them. I’m sure they’ll call back any day now

Tuesday's Assignment

How important is it to network with high officials in government? Can you be successful in business
or life without connecting with government? Is it any different in Canada than in your country of origin?

Here are your tasks:
  1. Role Play: Corrupt Officials
  2. Take dictation from 3:45 - 4:07, check with a partner, practise it aloud, and record a chirbit.
  3. Edit your blog to show improvements in your writing skills:
    1. Do not delete the original writing, but label it "BEFORE."
    2. Copy the original writing, label it "AFTER," and correct it using the checklist.
    3. Update your blog.
1.
Vera: I can’t believe that Stan has been arrested. I know that he wasn’t always on the up-and-up, but he’s being accused of influence peddling and taking bribes

Keigo: Stan has been getting kickbacks for years. Everybody knew that if you wanted to get what you wanted from this department, you had to grease Stan’s palms. There isn’t a more corrupt official than Stan.

Vera: But he was always so nice to me.

Keigo: That was part of the problem. He was always good to his friends and family. That’s why he’s also known for his nepotism and cronyism. He gave friends and family plum jobs with big salaries. He had an entire good old boy network

Vera: Do you really think he’ll go to jail

Keigo: I’m sure of it. On second thought, if he can find a judge who’s on the take and is as corrupt as he is, he has a fighting chance

2.
That means a commitment involved. Time spent serving your clients today. Time spent building. Time spent doing the work you have to do. That's today's revenue. I am not here to tell you that's not important, it's important. That's why we all got paid. We got a great job for the clients we already have. But building the network is a professional contact who can and will refer your business. That's a investment tomorrow.
I mean there's a commitment involved: Time spent serving your clients today, time spent billing, time spent doing the work you have to do. That's today's revenue. I'm not here to tell you that that's not important. It is important. That's how we all get paid. We got to do a great job for the clients we already have.
But building a network of professional contacts who can and will refer your business--that's your investment for tomorrow!

It's the last week of the month! So let's remember to do our feedback on the LINC program!

Phan: Hi, Montel. Thanks for agreeing to meet with me.

Montel: It’s my pleasure.

Phan: Since I’m new here, I was hoping you might be willing to give me some pointers on how to get new clients. To be honest, I’ve never been on this side of the fence before and I’m a little out of my comfort zone

Montel: Oh, sure, I’m glad to give you as much help as I can. Getting clients is a bit of an art, but the key is building relationships.

Phan: What do you mean?

Montel: Most of my clients come to me through networking. I get referrals from people who know me and know my track record

Phan: Really? I was thinking that I needed to send out some direct mail or do some cold calling

Montel: You may need to do that to start, but if I were you, I’d also spend time making connections in the business community. Go where you think business prospects may be. To woo new clients, you need to meet them first.

Phan: How do I find out where they’ll be?

Montel: Again, you make contacts. You’ve made the first step today by getting in touch with me. I’m going to a reception tonight and it will be a who’s who of the business community. Do you want to go?

Phan: Really? You’d let me tag along

Montel: Sure, but there’s a quid pro quo. In the future, if you get invited to something like this, you invite me to go along.

Phan: That’s more than fair. I think I just got my first lesson in making business connections.

Tuesday's Assignment

Welcome back to class!
Hope you enjoyed the concert yesterday. Did it help you in any way in terms of your health?
This week, we hope to exercise our bodies and our minds a bit.
Here are your tasks:
  1. Listening--take notes and practise pronunciation: Healthy Lifestyle
  2. Role Play--first by yourself, then with a partner: Eating Unhealthy Foods
  3. Write up your trip report--in either first or third person, about our trips to the AGO and Roy Thomson Hall. This is very important if you wish to be assessed on your writing skills.
  4. As Canada looks at the federal election results, here are the results of the Student Vote in which we participated before the Thanksgiving Holiday. Compare them, and tell a partner if and how you find the comparison surprising.

1.Healthy Lifestyle
The man wants to playing the basketball with his colleagues. For avoiding a heart attack, his wife asks him to do something. First, she asks him to have a physical before his begin. Second, she asks her husband to watch his diet, to cut back on the fatty foods and to eat more vegetables. Last, she asks him to take up a little weight training to strengthen his muscles and to try cycling to build up his cardiovascular system.

2. Role Play
Helen: So, what’s for lunch?

Gabe: Since you were nice enough to spend your Saturday morning helping me out, I’ll make sandwiches for lunch. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but I make a mean sandwich.

Helen: That sounds good, but you’re not going to use those cold cuts, are you?

Gabe: I was. Why?

Helen: Those are processed meats made with additives and a lot of sodium – definitely not what you’d want to put into your body.

Gabe: I eat these kinds of cold cuts all the time.

Helen: You shouldn’t if you don’t want to eat a lot saturated fat.

Gabe: Okay, how about if I make us salads.

Helen: Not with those greens. Unless they’re organic, they’re full of pesticides and chemicals.

Gabe: [sighs] All right, how about if I make us healthy smoothies?

Helen: Only if you use only fresh fruit. Bottled juices are full of high-fructose corn syrup. Yuck!

Gabe: I’ve got a great idea.

Helen: What?

Gabe: You pick the restaurant and I’ll buy you lunch.

Helen: I don’t want to put you to any trouble.

Gabe: It’s no trouble at all. [Said under his breath] I’d do anything to get you out of my kitchen!

3. Write up your trip report
There was a free organ concert by Dr.David Baskeyfield at Roy Thomson Hall yesterday. I didn't show up  because I got had the flu last week and was still feeling uncomfortable. This morning, Jane told me something about the concert. Dr.David Baskeyfield is a very young British organist. And he is also the First Prize Winner of the 2014 Canadian International Organ Competition. He played seven masterworks at the concert. Jane said she had never seen the masterworks performed so brilliantly. He could use his hands and feet to play at the same time; It was fantastic. I (feel so sorry)regretted missing the concert and hope to have another chance to see the show.

4.           Seat Count                           Vote Count
